Goodbye August, Hello September!

After months of secrecy I just wrapped up a mystery project that I’ve been totally consumed by these last months! Fingers crossed that it won’t remain eternally secret as I’ve really enjoyed it. By far the coolest thing I’ve done I think, at least in my opinion ๐Ÿ˜‰

Taking Back Your Time. (goodbye April, hello May)

Standard

Something I find quite funny is how bloggers usually apologize their absence on their blog at one time or the other ๐Ÿ˜› If you take your time to check out a whole bunch of random “hobby-bloggers” you will find entries with an introduction around the lines of “…sorry I haven’t been blogging that much lately” or “…wow..I had no idea I had been gone for so long”… it is actually quite a funny observation and makes me think of an article I read at the beginning of the year, addressing how most people slip out of their new years resolution before January is even over ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

It is actually quite scary to think of that unless you make active choices to change certain habits ย a change is not gonna happen. Writing down a plan on how to go about things, might seem quite obvious, but I’m sure there are a lot of people who just think to themselves that they should do a whole bunch of things without them ever getting done. There wouldn’t be such a market for “self-help” books if that wasn’t the case. A good example are some of the apps I got myself not that long ago. A great thing about apps is that they keep track of your activity; accomplishing streaks can be a motivating factor. The daily reminders have the opposite effect, in fact at a certain point during the first moths of the year; Duolingo ( the popular language app) stopped sending me notifications all together with the message: ” we will stop sending you daily reminders as it isn’t working anyway” which is one of the funniest notifications I’ve received from any app. Funny enough I remember it as it was humorous and different to the repetitive messages I had previously received. Maybe it can be compared to parents who tell you the same things over and over without it ever really taking hold in your brain, until there is some sort of threat attached to the message. I don’t necessarily think paternal nuisance or anger is what ย makes a child pay attention, it might just be that the message has been altered. Now the message is slightly different so we actually pay attention and remember it….or for sometime at least until it is forgotten again.

You literally have to make a conscious, determined choice to make a serious mindful effort to alter whatever it is that you want to change in your life, the push is not going to come from a nagging app, the push can only come from within. The good news is that it only takes 13 days to turn something into a new habit! Something else that I read in an article not long ago also revealed how thinking about options/choices is way more helpful when it comes to changing negative habits. If there is something that you gravitate towards that isn’t particularly good for you, think to yourself that “I’ll do so and so instead of this”, presenting options to yourself will give you the freedom to say no more easily, than if you rely on will power alone, according to said article.

Last month I re-read the outlines in the three books about mental training that I wrote about here on my blog previously. I spent a great deal of time revising if I was making the right decisions and if I had taken care of certain issues I had noted down in my planner earlier in the year. I was adjusting and reminding myself of certain goals, something that human beings have a tendency of doing too rarely. Something I noticed in my previous diaries was how I would very often write about “getting back into form again” something that struck me as 1) surprisingly repetitive and 2) sad – as you should feel and tell yourself that you are in good form (you are only improving.)

Thinking that you are constantly standing staring up at a goal instead of staring straight ahead thinking to yourself ” ah, of course I’m in good form, I’m always that” seemed a bit counter productive to me. I have not been particularly good at keeping diaries either, as the pages at one point or the other became empty or full of random ideas scribbled in all sorts of illogical places.

Last month I also decided to create some sort of “table-layout” when it came to my practise routine and figured that I was at my happiest if my time had been equally divided between the various things I do musically, than if all my concentration was focused on my guitar only.

Good time management or simply good awareness gives you the power to take back your day rather than the day owning you ;):)

So next time you feel like writing or saying ” sorry I haven’t been active on my blog lately” or ” woooops how long hasn’t it been since I checked into app so and so” bear in mind that ย only total awareness of your time will make you own that time.

How To Have Fun – According to Moi.

Standard

In Norway we have a saying that loosely translated would go like this: ” You Don’t Have More Fun, Than The Fun You Create Yourself”.

I do believe that I’m the living proof of that statement.

Yesterday I spent 10 hours and 44 minutes working on nothing but music; my aim this month has been to finalize and complete a body of work that I’ve dubbed: “album nr.3”. This is a number of songs that are all of a personal nature and were all written around the same time.

This material is in my opinion the best songs that I’ve ever written and the body of work is unique in that it was all created around the time frame of 2014-2015, with the majority of the material having been written last year.

I have an incredible amount of “backlogged” material; enough songs for a 2nd Metal Album, ( Metal Album Nr.1 will be released whenever I get the mixes/masters), enough material for 2 instrumental albums and lost of songs & ideas laying about.

My usual M.O. is to work on songs over several years, you could pretty much call my previous songs for musical collages. They all have multiple lyric sets usually, and nothing is settled as a riff in one song could go into another and a bridge section could all of a sudden end up as a chorus in another tune. It’s a giant puzzle in motion where I basically just try to find the right combination of pieces.

In contrast it seems that when I finally decided to write personal music that the songs just came to me in very complete forms as a huge creative tsunami. Maybe this is also why these tracks are being prioritized as the vast majority are new songs and I find this new creative process that I’ve been in the receiving end for very intriguing.

If I focus on the ” fun I can create for myself” I must admit that I enjoy myself tremendously, I don’t have words to describe how cool it is to have the gift of creativity. I do believe it is the gift to be the most grateful for, because if you “only” sing/play/perform you will need other people to create for you.

To be able to conceive something out of absolutely nothing is great, great fun and nothing can compare. The coolest characteristic of creativity as well, is that it always finds a way, either you will draw and fall in love with empty canvases and blank books as it enables you to just create out of thin air, or creativity will come to you in the form of writing and you’ll fall in love with an empty notebook and a simple pen.

The truest form of joy though is when you can use the outlet that you love the most which in my case is music ๐Ÿ™‚

If I’m going to be brutally honest I’m never sad or disappointed because of something I do, whenever I’m unhappy it is always caused by factors outside of myself.

But if I’m going to focus on just myself and my abilities, such as the 5 songs I finalised yesterday I’m probably one of the happiest people on this earth. I’m profoundly infatuated with the gifts that I’ve been given and I pat myself on the back for having the drive to put in all the hours and the effort it takes to take these talents somewhere.

Then again I don’t know how many artists that are out there who would consider it “fun” to spend 6-8 hour practise routines, for 6 months, only to reach a specific “goal”. I don’t know how many other musicians who would gladly spend almost 11 hours in a day to complete a group of songs, to meet a specific deadline in order to get the work done. The impression I largely have is that people wanna “have a life” as if thought practising or writing is some sort of sacrifice. Which means that the music gets prioritized when it doesn’t clash with a holiday, a nagging partner or going out for a beer with friends, or watching something on Netflix; etc.

If you reach the goal you have in mind, how could the effort you have to invest be considered a sacrifice?

Wouldn’t the disappointment be if you didn’t reach your goal?

And how can you expect to ever exploit your potential if you are not willing to invest the necessary time and effort?

” You don’t have more fun, than the fun you create yourself”

I LOVE to play guitar.

Standard

Yes it might not come as a mega-surprise, but seriously, I really love what I do. Profoundly.

Just finished my playing routine, going thru all the tracks from my classical album and also some of my riffs. All of those riffs feel easy to play in comparison to the violin virtuoso material, funny enough.

Once upon a time these songs represented my technical limit, which I now find a bit funny. I mean, technicality aside I still like those melodies of mine, but it is certainly not challenging to play those songs anymore.

I’ve now embarked on a brand new virtuoso piece, I just couldn’t help it.

I won’t tell anyone what sort of ludicrous project I’ve embarked on now, but I can reveal that it is again quite unique.

The feeling of your fingers flying over the fretboard, knowing exactly where they are supposed to land next, always one step ahead, ย combined with the memory used to its fullest force, is literally priceless.

If you cannot find joy in the art of just playing and mastering your instrument you are seriously doing something wrong.

I know. That I Love.

That I LOVE. What I do.

Let me repeat.

I adore what I do.

21 Reasons I Rock \m/

Standard

Sooo, I’ve made fun of myself, made a list of my shortcomings, complained about my Mr.Bean moments, drenched by blog in self-deprecating humour….so maybe it’s time to give myself some praise and write why I rock \m/ If I could find “21 reasons” as to why I suck, I’m sure I can find 21 reasons to be happy, 21 things that are positive about myself.

Oprah Winfrey apparently used to say that everyday you should think of 3 things that makes you happy, so when I grew up my mom would ask us around the dinner table “What are you happy about today?”. This was something I brought with me wherever I went apparently….something I find quite sweet ๐Ÿ™‚

So what are you happy about today? And why do you rock?

As self-educating and eye-opening it can be to write about your stinkers, take some time to write or think to yourself ย about why YOU are awesome \m/

I shall give it a go ๐Ÿ˜›

1- I care about what happens in the world and gave away all the money I got for my 18th birthday to an organisation that protects wild life ๐Ÿ˜› I’ve never repeated extreme charity such as that, as I need to live too, but the bottom line is, that I believe that we should all help others. Not in order to increase our popularity, but because it is what is right. I’m also an Amnesty International Member and have been so for years. I was trying to raise awareness about Darfur when I went to high school among other things, but didn’t have much luck. I started a zine with a friend of mine when I was a teen that was supposed to raise awareness concerning social injustice where we lived in our local area. We didn’t have much luck with that either. I almost went to India to do charity work when I was in my late teens but ended up not being able to go.

nhh1

2- I’m always there for my friends and family. At the end of the day I’m very loyal and ย I love to surprise people!

12063855_1019414851431241_5105748434631753008_n

3-Dedication. I had to learn how to speak Italian when I was six as my family moved to a foreign country. I also had to wrap my head around French when my family lived in France for a year and I also had to teach myself English as I went to high school in America :0 When I started playing guitar I would use an English-Norwegian dictionary to figure out the explanations in guitar magazines since my English sucked ๐Ÿ˜›

4-Humble. That’s right! Why else would I put myself in the situation of “student” again, when learning classical music on the guitar ๐Ÿ˜‰ I was already an internationally acclaimed musician, but I never let this get to my head as I believe that this will stifle your growth as a musician. I feel lucky that I always get feedback and constructive criticism about my performances and/or writing. This way I keep on growing.

5-I’m flexible and therefore have a good reputation when it comes to working with others in a studio setting for example. I’m as far as you could possibly get from being a dictator. I believe you will only shoot yourself in the foot if you don’t listen to others.

399093_359457250760341_396496863_n

6-I write my own music. That’s right. I’ve always been insanely creative. I always wanted to be a songwriter and even though I gave up a couple of times as a kid, I always came back to it.

12034324_1020750147964378_6650678031821244171_o

7-I can sing opera ๐Ÿ˜› I’m classically trained and even though I’m not done with my opera education I’m really proud of what I can do already and excited about what I will be able to master one day ๐Ÿ™‚

8-I taught myself how to play the guitar ๐Ÿ˜‰ That’s right! I didn’t get guitar lessons until I was working on “artist-development” in L.A. ๐Ÿ™‚

549178_506611322711599_234090903_n

9-I had my first art exhibition when I was 13 ๐Ÿ˜› I didn’t sell a single picture :/ but whatever, the bottom line is that I did it ๐Ÿ˜›

10-I had something that I had written published by a newspaper when I was 17. This was my first go at writing. I had to have a guitar break as my hand was all messed up after too much playing.

11-I used to draw fashion drawings. I wanted to be a designer. That was my dream from I was 6 years old. I kept on switching between wanting to be an archeologist and dreaming of owning my own “fashion house”.

1621813_289553277874469_1861343502201612894_n10245289_289553204541143_2351507536263325394_n 10013843_289553151207815_4521463671566816381_n 10007459_289553317874465_5056979423645525444_n

12-Even though my visual arts is in the shadow of my music, I love to draw and this is what I’ve done the longest. I evenย ย wrote and illustrated a children’s book. I have plenty of other quirky characters I’ve come up with as I love “designing” characters, if there ever was such a word. If I wasn’t a musician it would have been cool to to have an arts degree and create graphic novels or maybe story boards for movies.

13-I co-direct my music videos as I “see my music ” when I write it.

1236019_594843657221698_1597387068_n-2

14-I did theater once and loved it. That was the moment I figured that I wanted to be a performer.I love to play the “villain” or be “crazy”.

857814_517166914989373_2137383954_o

15- When I was a kid I was a goalie \m/

16- I also used to do Marshall Arts!

17-When I was 11 I got my first “studded” belt with proper nails, not the flat plastic ones ๐Ÿ˜› ย So no wonder that my current purse looks like this \m/

11182266_919934818045912_961047159068915041_n

18- I love to read and have always been a book-worm ๐Ÿ˜›

19- I always wanted a Doberman called Lucius and a Westie called Truffles. I don’t have either but I have a bearded Dragon I’ve named after Severus Snape. I would also like to have a white bunny, who I would probably name Draco ๐Ÿ˜› I always wanted to own a snake, but after holding several different types I was shocked to see how strong they are, snakes aren’t very social either and try to hide away and escape. I figured that snakes probably aren’t that keen on “being owned” by anyone.

This is my guy \m/

This is my guy \m/

20- I have a very varied taste when it comes to music and there are plenty of things that interest me that have nothing to do with show-biz. I’m obsessed with space for example.

21- My hair looks like this. I cut it short in 2005 and coloured it green ๐Ÿ˜ฎ I decided to let it grow to see how long it could possibly get! I’m still curious to see how far down it will go \m/
