Finally some sponsored YouTube content! Find out how you can do the same!

So this morning I woke up to the beautiful sight of my account looking like this:

sponsorship notification

This is how it looks like when you have made an approved sponsored video! It will show up in your content section and automatically become part of your “commercial-cv.”

If you want to know more about the site and my experience so far then make sure that you join my LIVE stream on Patreon for only 1$ on the 28th this month! I do minimum two update videos every month and have turned these into live streams in 2019 which means that not only will you get all sorts of tips and advice relevant to being an indie-musician you can also ask me questions and interact with me!

Obviously I’m very excited about my first sponsored content and I hope that I will get hired to make many more videos in the future! I’ve only contacted brands that are related to interests that I’ve expressed on my social media, which is an important detail when it comes to sponsored content! You have to aim for products that genuinely interests you or that you think that your fans/followers will have an interest in!

Whenever you create a video that features sponsored content you are obliged by law to notify the viewer, which means that none of the videos that I’ve made in the past for brands were sponsored! The standard for a video with 100.000 views on YouTube is 10.000$ for a featured product. That’s quite something to find out, especially when you are creating content that is in perpetuity, which obviously is the case whenever an artist makes a music video!

I wish that there was an organisation for independent musicians that could notify creatives of these things! As it is you just have to find out things on your own which means that you’ll miss out on financial opportunities!

The secretive nature of musicians also makes it difficult to “unionise” if you get what I’m trying to say. When I was offered to do my very 1st clinic some years back I tried to shop around and ask musicians who only do clinics what an average rate might be. Nobody wanted to help me with this so I was never able to figure out what a standard industry rate might look like. Likewise; when I was ill and injured I couldn’t find any averages for injuries or an estimated retirement age which meant that I had to resort to online forums which is not representative due to limited sample sizes!ย

The music industry is so murky that it leaves a lot of people fumbling in the darkness when it comes to: technique, health & money!ย

I think most aspiring musicians will have come across people who play amazing licks and runs only to receive a note with a scale written on it if asking about said lick!

I took lessons with a very difficult (but well-respected) guitar teacher some years back who waited until my hand was hurting so much that I had to take a break before he shared health-related knowledge with me. He literally waited until I could have gotten injured. That is not acceptable tutoring. Nor is it acceptable to shower students in sarcasm which I guess is common with miserable musicians. Envy is apparently rampant in this business which is not a good thing.

The secrecy that guitar players shroud themselves in is ridiculous as well since it only makes it harder for musicians as a demographic.ย The general atomised culture makes it easier to take advantage of performers or creative artists in show biz!

If you are looking for a mentor or a teacher who doesn’t hold anything back then you should get in touch with me! Not only do I customise my music lessons to fit whatever individual needs, I also share my knowledge. Obviously I don’t do this for free! In order to have a one-hour customised private lesson with me over SKYPE or in person you’ll have to pay 30GBP, I will also expect that I’m mentioned or thanked if I aid you when it comes to your recordings, etc; It is a bit silly to seek out expertise only to pretend that you came up with everything on your own afterwards!

I always give credit to Ramon Ortiz even though I didn’t take that many lessons with him, because he had a great influence on my heavy metal guitar playing. I also mention Steve Smyth even though I only had one masterclass with him. He is a great teacher and if anything, he ย boosted my confidence as a player before I recorded my Evolution EP!

And of course I always thank my mother Elisabeth who taught me how to sing opera by using the bel canto technique, not to forget that she is also my manager!

Letting people know that you appreciate their help and support by giving them credit or by officially thanking them should become more commonplace in showbiz!

There is always a generation of musicians coming after you and it is the duty of those who are more experienced to pass their knowledge on, especially if you know how to sing or play classical music.

This is part of our irreplaceable European heritage and it can never be allowed to get lost!

“Be Yourself” they said!!! :O

The number one advice spewed out into the social media world by successful โ€œinfluencers” is: “Be Yourself!”

Just the other day I was looking for some information regarding music gear and stumbled upon a music vlog where the host was sitting bare-chested, clearly intoxicated, mumbling barely audible instructions into his microphone.

I’ve been in the receiving end of links to brand new YouTube channels featuring hosts doing everything in their power to come across as hyperactive, frantic and basically crazy.

Advising people to just be themselves makes it easier for smooth talking charlatans or brand aware entrepreneurs to gain even more ground while their potential competitors self-sabotage by simply “being themselves.”

Let’s take a look at the way that I’ve used Instagram in the past for an instance.

I did my first post on the social media site in 2014 after receiving my first smart phone.

What did I post? A photo of the Ancient Aliens box set I received for Christmas. Currently my like count on the picture stands at: 22

Now Instagram was never our number one marketing tool. I did not have much of a following on there, had other pages that were our main focus and was never consistently ย active on the site.

Fast forward to 2019 and so far this year I’ve posted 51 posts with:

  • 38 of them falling into the โ€œself-promotionโ€œ category (since they are photos/videos of me),
  • 2 of the pictures are still of me but they are joke posts, (so that’s 40 out of 51 pictures being of me),
  • 3 are of fans (pictures sent to me from my followers posing with my CD)
  • 5 are of personal objects including artwork for sale and
  • 3 features written text (a giveaway instruction, a thank you flier and a screenshot of my Twitter)

Any picture of me whether professional or self-taken has over a 100 likes with many going into the 200 likes category etc;

Music posts with clips from my music videos + pictures of me = awesome.

Pictures of personal objects and/or text/quote posts = not so much.

Which is what I observed when going through my Instagram posts from previous years and why I made a conscious decision to change things.

The irony of course is that someone might look at all of this drawing the conclusion that this โ€œcommander-in-chief chick” must surely be a narcissist!

Several years ago I remember that a photo of me rehearsing with a bare belly was uploaded to Facebook and the reaction was of course very positive.

This was not done to fish for compliments or to boost a fragile ego, it was put out there to increase buzz and social media reach!

This is why online-profiling can be so very inaccurate, because what is more important to you? Posting a picture from your favourite passage of a book receiving maybe 30 likes or posting a photo that gets you 300 likes and lots of engagement from your followers? The more people engage the more your content spreads which is why it is wrong to claim that โ€œunfiltered-be-yourselfโ€œ content seals the deal!

Likewise I love writing on my blog. It is my number one favourite hobby yet even though I’m not a beauty blogger I find that my number one most popular entry of all times is the one that I wrote about skincare!

Blog posts where I write about myself or posts featuring pictures of me even if there is no interesting content in the post itself gets lots of buzz.

Self-help is also high on the list along with โ€œhow toโ€œ articles.

What do I prefer to write about? The world, society, ideas, thoughts, books. I like to think about ideas and concepts so if I was to be myself I would just write about this while bombarding my Instagram page with all sorts of nonsense that wouldn’t mean anything to anybody else but myself!

What do I like more than anything else?

To sell music because this is ultimately what I’m all about and what I know!

This is my passion, my craft and my talent!

So keep this in mind next time someone tells you to just be yourself on the internet! โค

My song “Stay With Me” is doing well in a voter-based song competition!

It made me very happy to see that my original song โ€œStay With Me” is doing well in yet another voter-based song competition!

I previously submitted my song to “Fresh On The Net” where strangers listen to and vote for their favourite tune among an ocean of independent songs.

You will be disqualified if you alert your fans and followers to the fact that your song has been shortlisted.

So if you see that your song gets through the initial round you have to stand by quietly and wait to see if you get featured with a proper article on the site.

I take it as a very good sign that I’ve been able to stand out time and time again in such a setting!

Several of my releases have been shortlisted on Fresh On The Net, I even received airplay for my original song โ€œLet It Go” on BBC6 some years ago, which can happen if you submit your song!

Now I’m receiving favourable feedback once again from total strangers to my music!

I did not submit my music to this Instagram site, but I was very happy that they decided to just throw me into the mix!

I appreciate all support and exposure!

It is especially awesome to see that my original songwriting pops-out to strangers!

I have of course told my Instagram followers about “instaoriginalmusiccompetition” so now the percentage looks even better!

Years ago I was featured in a voter-based guitar competition. When I found out about it I posted about it everywhere but once the voting was over the site decided to withhold the results! I figured that they probably didn’t like who won! Maybe it was me? ๐Ÿ˜ฎ
